Tweetworks TV Episode 72 – Mashable, Lotus Connect, OneForty and Twitter Developers

It was very nice to see Tweetworks mentioned on Mashable again. It is exciting to be part of such a vibrant development community.
In other awesome news, Tweetworks user-created groups have crested the 2,600 mark. You have created 2,009 public groups and 606 private groups. That’s incredible. Group count is my most important metric because when the rest of the Twitter development community gets around to understanding what Biz Stone and I know, that meta data (aka relevancy and context) is needed to bring the conversation web to the masses, we’ll see many of them leveraging the foundation we’ve built through our API.
Speaking of community…
Many of my friends, Aaron Strout of Powered, Jim Storer and Rachel Happe of The Community Roundtable, and Bryan Person of Live World are heavily involved with developing and facilitating community engagment. Recently a few of them have mentioned that I should promote Tweetworks’s inherent community assets as a value proposition. I think they may be on to something.
Featured Groups:
- LotusConnections (created by Praveen Pandey) – If you use Lotus Connections as a social software for you busienss be sure to connect with other users and administrators here. On a side note, John Stack of 3 Big Heads, had the interesting idea of plugging Lotus Connections into Tweetworks. Hmm..
- DevelopingTwitter (created by Kristi Colvin) – The Twitter developer community is growing by leaps and bounds. Barely a day goes by without something new and creative hitting the scene. Kristi herself recently released TwitterFace, a branded Twitter interface tool.
All this talk of community, Twitter and the Tweetworks API got me thinking of Laura Fitton‘s new company OneForty (which launched its Alpha today). Laura is working to make it easier for users to navigate the maze of Twitter powered products while giving developers a showcase for their creations. Be sure to pay OneForty a visit to see what’s cooking. I smell some coolness.

Tweetworks TV Episode 58 – The #FixReplies Hullabaloo

Earlier this week Twitter made a change that has a lot its power users all fired up. In short you will no longer see replies made from someone you follow to someone you do not follow.
Here’s my take on this issue:
- Why did Twitter do it?
- What it means for you?
- Using Tweetworks is an excellent solution to this problem.
- You can help bring Tweetworks to your favorite Twitter application.
Featured Tweetworks Users:
- Jason Coffee of Coffee Cup News. Find him hanging around the Coffee group on Tweetworks.
- Dan Silverstein game designer extraordinaire. Dan will be joining me on Tweetworks TV tomorrow to talk about his new game and other cool stuff.
Tweetworks TV Episode 51 – A Shout Out to the Ladies
I met a fantastic lady named Lesley Lambert at PodCamp Western Mass who, in addition to being totally awesome in her own right, recently joined Tweetworks and set up a group called TwitterQueens. It seems Lesley and a group of ladies get their tweet on with the hashtag #TwitterQueens and she thought it might be a super cool idea to use Tweetworks for the group. She asked if I would profile the group on the show and I thought that was a fantastic idea. In fact, I thought a whole show celebrating the women focused groups on Tweetworks would be cool. So here we go!
Featured Groups:
- TwitterQueens (created by Lesley Lambert) – Social Media Vixens using the internet for fun, profit and glory!
- Muslimah (created by Aisha Abdurahman) - Muslim Women who use twitter

Wow! The first 50 shows went by quickly.
Tweetworks users are setting up groups at a very fast pace. To date you have created over 1,558 topical groups. Last week alone users created 96 new public groups, averaging 13 new groups per day.
Featured Groups:
- CollegPlanners (created by @DreamStrategy) – Helping Families Pay for College. This group promises to be huge if done right. Just take a look at what Chris Penn has accomplished with the Financial Aid Podcast.
- J199Spring09 (created by Michael Werner) – A Twitter group for J199, 21st Century Medi. Another really cool class using a Tweetworks group.
Other Mentions:
- Laura Fitton is writing the book “Twitter for Dummies” and would like your help. Swing by the book site or this Tweetworks thread and share your best Twitter tips and tricks.
Tweetworks TV Episode 48 – Green Thumbs, Celtics and Huh

Green Day
Spring is here and it’s time to start thinking about planting stuff outside. Whether it’s a vegetable garden, a new tree in the yard or tending to the flower box in the window nothing says spring like live plants.
It’s also almost time for the NBA playoffs and while we’re talking about things that are green…how about them Celtics? Way better than the Nicks right? Take that @AJV! I had to bust AJ Vaynerchuk‘s chops a little bit because he kind of dissed Boston in a video at SXSW. Now he wasn’t too inflammatory but still come on…this is our house.
Huh…That IS cool
I also spent a little time reflecting on a little “huh” moment I had today. It’s always weird when you notice something special about your own product that you hadn’t really paid much attention to before. When was the last time someone replied to a Twitter post of yours that was more than a day old? Probably never right?
Well, on Tweetworks it’s not uncommon for a great thread that was started over a month ago to continue to have life. This is because popular threads tend to stay at the top in a group. People come to the group see something cool and jump in. Since we keep the thread with the most recent activity on top some conversations just keep on going. Like this one by Amy Langford in the Movies where she asks “What’s your stick movie?“

Tweetworks TV Episode 47 – Knitting, Beaches and Cigars
Click Here for iPhone Version or Subscribe on iTunes
We are creeping up on episode 50 and I’d love to hear your ideas for the big five-O show. Coincidentally, the 50th show will be shot on Monday which is the day of the big coffee tweetup. Take a look at all the cool people who will be there and let me know what we should talk about. Should I interview specific people or should I ask everyone to weigh in on a certain issue or topic?
Featured Groups:
- KnittingandCrochet (created by Evelyn Bourne) – “For those who love to chat about knitting, crochet, spinning, fiber, yarn, UFO’s, celebrate FO’s, fiber festivals yadda, yadda, yadda.” This group represents one of those “YES” moments for me. I’ve been using the example of a quilting group to illustrate the fact that my Mom (Mom is a proxy for the average person) will not use hashtags or Twitter search queries or follow thousands of people just so she can talk about quilting. And here we have an awesome group set up by @ebb567 to talk about knitting and crocheting. It’s also interesting because Mark Penn describes how knitting is making a comback amoung the younger population in his book Microtrends. In fact, a couple of months ago I met Guido Stein who very dedicated to the knitting community. The trend is real.
- BeachesResorts (created by BeachesResorts) – “Luxury Included Resorts in Jamaica and Turks and Caicos” I normally don’t like to promote brand focused groups, instead opting for more generalized topical groups, however it strikes me that Beaches and Sandals (below) represent a community in much the same way as Disney does. People look forward to their vacations and connecting with people who enjoy the same experience is always fun.
- SandalsResorts (created by SandalsResorts) – Luxury Included Resorts in Jamaica, Antigua, St. Lucia and The Bahamas
- Cigars (created by BentonJP) – “Everything about Cigars” Just for a minute I want you to imagine lying in a hammock (maybe at a Beaches or Sandals resort) with a rum drink and fine cigar. That picture right there is why I profiled the cigar group today.
Tweetworks TV Episode 40 – Stop Whining About Auto DMs Rant
Mike Langford goes off on a cold medicine induced rant about the incessant whining about auto DM’s on Twitter. “Being mad about auto DMs is like eating a bunch of Doritos and drinking beer only to be upset that your burps stink.” Mike says. What do you think? Join the thread Mike started this morning and share your thoughts about auto DMs.
After the rant winds down we get into the featured groups, complete with special effects. Ooh!
Featured Groups:
- TrueParanormal (created by @DebAllen) – Share stories and insights related to the paranormal/supernatural.
- Jamaica (created by @JamaicaTweets) – Sun, sand and surf with a rum drink sounds pretty good right about now doesn’t it?
- LOHAStraveler (created by @rainfrog) – We have no idea what they are talking about in this group but the Chinese characters look pretty cool.
- TCBRacing (created by @jrmoore987) – Just think, in about a month from now all the hardcore cyclists will be hitting the roads and trails again. Ride on!
Tweetworks TV Episode 39 – Private Group, Events and Estonia
Click Here for iPhone Version or Subscribe on iTunes
We saw another large number of new Tweetworks groups created by users last week. One private group in particular caught Mike Langford‘s eye, it already has 104 members. Wow!
We also rolled out a new notification feature on your groups tab. Notice the new members listed in the sidebar. Be sure to stop by and make them feel welcome.
Featured Groups:
- 90DayChallenge (created by @AskDKLive) – This is your 911 Emergency Q&A Forum. Only use this if you have an important question and you can’t find the answer in the 24/7 chats or the Ohana community. I will personally answer questions here daily. So check back often. “Very interesting, smart and unforeseen usage of a private group.” ~ Mike Langford
- WebinarTweets (created by @WebinarTweets) – List your webinars, podcasts, & event links @webinartweets . Keep it short and to the point. “@BostonTweetup, a Twitter handle created by @JoselinMane & @bostonmarketer, is employing a similar technique. I suggest they tweet events from the BostonTweeters group for a few reasons; 1) there are 220+ users there who have identified themselves as from the Boston area 2) Tweetworks sends out email and DM notifications to group members so they’ll get reminders about your event 3) tweets can be passed to Twitter so you’ll get double the potential exposure 4) SEO, tweeting about BostonTweetups in the BostonTweeters group creates a density of relevant content.” ~ Mike Langford
- Estonia (created by @krishaamer) – For all Twitter users from Estonia. “Seeing new international groups never gets old. The Estonia group is cool and very intriguing given that is was created by a user from Lisbon, Portugal.” ~ Mike Langford
